The Final Days of Summer & Blueberry Lavender Lemonade

Is it just me, or does time seem to pass more quickly with age? I remember as a child feeling like summer lingered for ages, but as an adult, I feel like I blink, and the 4th of July (my halfway mark for summer) suddenly appears. Now, somehow, we’re in the final days of August. Cory returned to work weeks ago, and now he’s on his third week of the school year with students. My teaching schedule has (more or less) settled into place for the fall semester, and my kids come to lessons talking of marching band, sports practices, and other school activities. How did we get here so quickly?

I think part of the problem, for me at least, is that I didn’t do the best job of planning my summer this year. As Gretchen Rubin, an author and podcaster I adore who writes and speaks of happiness, habit change, and human nature, regularly reminds me in her podcast Happier, time seems to pass more slowly and feel richer when we do something different or special. I had plans to plan my summer… I just never made it past that stage. Luckily, we have some fantastic friends and family that planned and organized weekend trips, board game days, and other get-togethers that absolutely made the summer wonderful. Still, I wish I had made more dates with friends, spent more time with those I loved, gotten out in nature more… Lessons to remember going forward, I suppose; it’s all about progress, after all.

Regardless, as I sit here on a muggy late august afternoon, I fully intend to enjoy the remnants of summer with a few more lazy afternoons of reading, a few more morning coffee sessions on the deck with the kittens, and at least a couple more light, crisp, summery drinks with friends. Enter this fabulous blueberry lavender lemonade, a perfectly bright and sunshiney drink with sweet berries and a hint of honey to temper the sour lemon. Whether you make it into a fun summer co*cktail by adding the vodka or keep it virgin and kid-friendly, you should definitely whip up a batch of this unique lemonade and revel in the warmth and sun a little while longer.

Blueberry Lavender Lemonade – A Simple, Unique Summer Drink

As you may recall, I love lavender (and other floral or herby flavors), and this combination of lavender and blueberry has appeared before on the blog in my blueberry lemon lavender energy bites. Since I’m obsessed with the blueberry lavender flavor combination, I figured I should definitely create a unique drink centered around them, and I wanted this particular drink to be delicious with or without the addition of alcohol. After all, I want everyone to enjoy this amazing blueberry lavender lemonade!

I personally find many commercial or powdered mix lemonades far too sweet (if I get that icky sugary film on my teeth after drinking it, it’s gone way, way too far with the sugar) and often laden with unnecessary ingredients. This blueberry lavender lemonade gets most of its sweetness from the natural sugars in the blueberries, but I do add some honey (agave for vegan) to balance the tartness of the lemons just a bit more. Of course, you can adjust sweetness levels to your liking by adding more honey or agave.

Easy Prep & Blend: Making your Blueberry Lavender Lemonade

This refreshing lemonade has only five ingredients (6 with vodka!), so quality of said ingredients is key! You’ll need ripe blueberries and juicy lemons along with a fragrant, food grade dried lavenderand some excellent liquid raw honey. If your tap water doesn’t taste great, run it through a filter first for this lemonade.

If you choose to turn your blueberry lavender lemonade into a co*cktail (this is such a perfect co*cktail for brunch or afternoons outside!), choose a non-flavored vodka of sufficient quality for mixing; I actually think the vodka really adds to the lemonade. It somehow mellows out the lavender just a tiny bit, bringing it into perfect balance with the berries and lemons, and gives the drink a very smooth finish. For juicing the lemons, I recommend a juicer like thisBlueberry Lavender Lemonade (with co*cktail Option!) - Our Sweetly Spiced Life (3)to ensure you get all the juice out of each lemon! We’ve gone through several juicers over the years, and this one is easily my favorite.

To really bring out the lavender flavor in this blueberry lemonade, crush the lavender before adding it to the blender. If you have a mortar and pestle, use it, but if you don’t, you can try a muddler, the back of a spoon, the flat side of a meat mallet… whatever is handy to crush the lavender just a bit. To take this bright, summer co*cktail lemonade to the next level, you really need to strain it. Once you blend the ingredients, let it settle for a few minutes, then gently and slowly pour the liquid through a tight-weave mesh strainer into a pitcher.

You may occasionally need to stop pouring and toss the accumulating blueberry skins and larger lavender bits before proceeding. I strain the lemonade twice when I make it (add the vodka after straining!). Alternatively, you can use a nut milk bag to strain the liquid, and rinse immediately after use to avoid stains from the berry juice! Even with the time straining the lemonade, the whole thing still takes less than 10 minutes, so it’s a quick homemade lemonade. Voila: blueberry lavender lemonade! Ah, summer drink perfection.

Blend it up! Blueberry Lavender Lemonade!
