Program overview

In the master’s program in Landscape Architecture, you focus especially on the areas of open space and object planning, vegetation technology/use of plants, and landscape and object construction while also deepening your existing knowledge. During your studies, you are taught cultural, methodological, aesthetic, and engineering content.

The basic principle of the program is to look at the problems in a theoretical-analytical way. This means that learning technical design skills is linked to recognizing possibilities of construction from theory to design to practical implementation. From this interplay, you develop conceptual designs that enable concrete planning for complex spatial systems.

Admission requirements

The formal admission requirement for the consecutive master’s program in Landscape Architecture is a first university degree in landscape architecture, landscape planning, architecture, urban planning, urban design, or a closely related subject qualifying the applicant for professional work. Besides this, you must have completed a six-month professional internship as well as at least 24 credit points in design as part of project-oriented courses related to landscape architecture.

The program is taught in German. If you are applying with a foreign school-leaving certificate, you must provide proof of German skills at a specific level. Knowledge of English is useful as some courses/modules are offered in English. However, this is not a condition for admission to studies.

Program structure

The master’s program in Landscape Architecture is a project degree program. Specific landscape architectural projects focusing on certain problems and practical work play a key role in studies. In these "studios," you will look at current planning and design tasks at the local, regional, national, or even international level in a holistic manner based on academic methods. The studios enable you to work together in an interdisciplinary way on tasks and problems from the areas of landscape architecture and serve to develop comprehensive conceptual and design skills. Together with the other courses in the program, the studios teach and provide opportunities to practice analytical tools (theories, methods, techniques) and develop model solutions on the levels of planning, society, construction, and design. The studio work also includes excursions.

The master’s program is divided into compulsory, compulsory elective, and elective components. The compulsory component totals 96 credit points, which include the studios and the master’s thesis. In addition, compulsory elective and elective components totaling 12 credit points each must be taken.

There is a proposed course schedule for the degree program. This is a recommendation for how to complete the degree program within the standard period of study of four semesters. Content and modules

The master’s degree program in Landscape Architecture consists of modules which combine curriculum content on a specific topic and often include various study and teaching formats such as lectures, practical tutorials, seminars, and practical projects. Students are required to earn a specific number of credit points and complete certain coursework and assessments in each module.

The MTS also provides an overview of which modules are mandatory for your degree program and which are elective. Detailed module descriptions provide information about the content, learning objectives, participation requirements, workload, type of assessment, and much more.

Acquired skills

The master’s program in Landscape Architecture provides you with the skills you need to design and develop open spaces and landscapes on various spatial levels (from the concrete location to the neighborhood to the region of the city or mega-city), in different regions (urban and rural areas), and in varying cultural contexts (European, global). During the program, you learn to analyze and assess complex relationships and conditions in the landscape and open spaces and show where action is needed. At the conceptual level, you can place the solutions developed into their strategic and instrumental context and implement them both technically and architecturally with the available materials while also considering sustainability aspects. In addition, you acquire the skills needed to bring together and coordinate relevant actors in a leadership position and establish communication structures in a targeted manner.

After your studies

The master’s program in Landscape Architecture aims to prepare you for an international, design-focused, and scientific field of work. As a graduate, you can work independently and responsibly as a landscape architect or take on research and development tasks or leadership positions in management and administration, especially for public and private open spaces. You design public and private parks and gardens, properties of public facilities such as schools and agencies, and playgrounds. You play a decisive role in the aesthetic design of our cities and communities. Graduates often also take on teaching tasks in vocational schools.
